This isn’t my life. Okay, it is my life, but not the way I envisioned it would be.

I wasn’t supposed to be a divorced mother of three when I turned the big 4-0. Sure, I expected the fine lines, gray hairs and left over baby belly. What I didn’t expect was expanding our family get-togethers by one… my ex-husband’s new child bride. Ok, ok, she’s not young. Maybe.

Did I mention this is not the life I planned?

It could always be worse, I know. I’m lucky to have a mother who loves to babysit, a best friend who loves sarcasm, and a new friend by the name of Greg who is a child whisperer and tells me my eyes are pretty.

Sigh… Greg.

The perfect, Adonis-like God of a man who keeps flirting with me. At least I think he’s flirting with me. It’s been so long, I don’t really know.

Between birthday parties, a few ill-advised bouts with make-up, and a whole slew of gymnastics classes, it’s finally time to take back some control.

So, while my girls learn all about how to grip the bar, I’m going to learn how to get a grip on my life. And maybe my heart.

You know when you finish THAT book? The one that you cannot put down? The one that makes you laugh so hard you cry and then cry so hard your family questions your sanity?

Getting A Grip: A #MyNewLife Romantic Comedy by M.E. Carter is THAT book. This is one of the best RomComs I have ever read and one so real, it knocked my socks off.

Elena is a porced mother of 3 young girls. A woman who is now single due to her jerk of an ex-husband that married a much younger woman. Even though Elena takes the high road in her relationship with her ex and his wife, he is totally undeserving as he put the blame on their relationship failing on her. Eleana is a great mom, doing her best for her family and dealing with the cards she was dealt. With a wonderful support system of her mom and her best friend Callie, life is just full of surprises.

Then we have Callie, the best friend who is probably THE best secondary character I have ever read. She is married to a man who is just as much of a child as her young son and that young son is CRAZY!! I was tired just reading about him and his crazy antics!! I couldn’t imagine having a child constantly on the go like that!

Then they meet and become friends with Greg. Oh, Greg. I don’t think my words can even justify how absolutely terrific this guy is. Greg will absolutely steal your heart! He’s a single dad, making friends in a new town and he is dealing with a crazy ex wife and trying to raise his sweet little girl. Greg is fun, sexy, understanding, and just fits into a easy friendship with Callie and Eleana.

Here is where we are going to get real for a minute….

I LOVE to read but honestly, 95% of the stories I read are written about the typical alpha…broad shoulders, trim waist, has an amazing job, is athletic, has a jaw line that could cut glass, is hung like a horse, etc. etc. Then let’s not forget the hip, young, fit woman who looks exceptional in everything she wears (or doesn’t wear), keeps herself together and is rocking those nice boobs and flat tummy.

Honestly, I rocked that back in my early 20’s too. But now I’m 40 and well, that definitely isn’t me anymore. I had my kids in my mid-to-late-20’s and 14 years later, I’m still trying to lose the “baby weight” and firm up everything. It’s taken me years to be remotely comfortable in my own skin and I still have times where I feel horrible about myself.

My point, you may ask??

Getting A Grip is probably the most realistic book I’ve read. M.E. Carter went and blew my mind and did something I have never, EVER read about. She made all of her characters authentic. There’s a woman who is insecure about herself but trying to teach her girls not to be. Another whose marriage is not all rainbows, great sex and I Love You’s every two seconds. And then there’s an alpha. An alpha who is also VERY insecure about himself and his body.

And that ending. You won’t see it coming from a mile away. And it’s a great ending to this book.

Getting A Grip is a book about real people, real life situations and real love. I cannot say enough about this book. This, people, is truly life and I enjoyed reading every single moment. It is one of those books that I know I will go back and read again (and actually, I already have). I look forward to book #2!!

About M.E. Carter

Mother, reader, storyteller—ME Carter never set out to write books. But when a friend practically forced a copy of Twilight into her hands, the love of the written word she had lost as a child was rekindled. With a story always rolling around in her head, it should come as no surprise that she finally started putting them on paper. She lives in Texas with her four children, Mary, Elizabeth, Carter and Bug, who sadly was born long after her pen name was created, and will probably need extensive therapy because of it.
