Phoenix /fēniks/: (in classical mythology) a unique bird inhabiting the Arabian Desert that burned itself on a funeral pyre before rising from the ashes with renewed youth to live through another cycle.

This isn’t mythology, it’s war, and Hendy is left in the hands of Hell’s cruelest gatekeepers.

His team is killed before his very eyes, and despite his efforts to save them, he’s captured and subjected to merciless torture—losing virtually every piece of his identity but his pulse.

After his rescue, he returns home from Afghanistan, saddled with facing the daunting task of healing his physical scars as well as the invisible ones—his emotional demons.

Dr. Presley Cole isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. Embarking on a new journey, she makes it her mission to prove to Hendy that his life isn’t over; that he’s worthy of love.

Because sometimes even a phoenix needs help to rise…

Out of the Ashes.

Out of Ashes by R.C. Boldt was my first read by this author and I loved it! It was a beautiful and emotional story about loss, suffering and healing. It deals with the difficult subject of PTSD and how to begin the healing process.

I absolutely loved Hendy, ex-Navy Seal Cristiano Hendrixson. He has suffered unspeakable acts after being captured while on a mission. When he returns home after his rescue, he is not only healing from the physical scars, but from those within as well. He struggles with feelings of not being worthy, however, even with everything he went through, he was sweet and good-natured. He was determined, sexy and you could not help but fall for him.

Dr. Presley Cole wants to help Hendy. She wants to show him how much he is worth and deserves. But reaching him will not be easy. She had a big heart and was very compassionate. I loved how she was with him. She saw him for who he was and not what he looked like. She was so open and refreshing.

This story was heart-wrenching and emotional, but also sweet and hopeful.  It was a slow-burn romance, but one you enjoy seeing bloom. Hendy and Presley were so good together. Like they just fit. They had fun together.

I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. I felt so much while reading. It was a powerful story of pain and suffering, but also of hope and recovery.  I am looking forward to reading more from this author
